About the method

The idea of 'love languages' suggests that people tend to express and receive love in different ways — and that many misunderstandings happen when two people speak different love languages. One person might feel most loved by kind words while their partner shows love by doing chores, and each can end up feeling unappreciated.

The concept was popularized in the 1990s by relationship counselor Gary Chapman, who described five common ways of showing love. Since then it has become one of the most talked-about ideas in modern relationships. Researchers are still studying how well it holds up; some studies suggest that most people value all five, and that paying attention to your partner's preferences is what matters most.

This test uses 30 original questions written for TestMyPsyche. Each one asks you to choose between two gestures, and each love language is compared with every other one the same number of times. Your result shows how often you chose each language. TestMyPsyche is independent and not affiliated with Gary Chapman or any official love languages product.

Frequently asked questions

What are the five love languages?

Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts (we call it Thoughtful Gifts) and Physical Touch. Most people value several, but one or two usually stand out.

Can I have more than one love language?

Yes. Your results show your full mix. It's common to have a clear favorite plus one or two others that also matter a lot.

Is this test only for couples?

No. Love languages apply to friends and family too. Think of the people closest to you when you answer.

Can my love language change?

It can. Life stages, stress and relationships can shift what makes you feel most cared for — for example, acts of service often matter more during busy or tiring periods.

How can I use my results?

Share them with the people you care about and ask about theirs. Knowing each other's love languages makes it easier to show love in ways that land.

Is this a scientific test?

Love languages are a popular and useful framework for conversation, but not a clinical measure. This test is for self-reflection and fun.
