About the method

The nine-type model describes personality through nine core motivations — the deep needs and fears that drive how we think, feel and act. It's usually drawn as a nine-pointed figure called the Enneagram (from the Greek words for 'nine' and 'drawing').

The modern form of the model was developed in the 1960s and 1970s by teachers including Oscar Ichazo and the Chilean psychiatrist Claudio Naranjo, who connected the nine types to psychological traits. It became popular worldwide from the 1980s onward through books and workshops.

Unlike trait tests, the nine-type model focuses on why you do things rather than just what you do. Many people also relate to one of the neighboring types (often called a 'wing'), which is why we show your scores for all nine.

The nine-type model is popular in coaching and personal growth, but it has less scientific research behind it than trait models like the Big Five. This test uses 36 original statements and our own type names, written for TestMyPsyche. It's for self-reflection and fun, not diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

What are the nine types?

The Idealist (1), Giver (2), Go-Getter (3), Romantic (4), Observer (5), Guardian (6), Adventurer (7), Protector (8) and Peacekeeper (9). Each type is defined by a core motivation.

Is this an Enneagram test?

It's based on the same nine-type idea, often called the Enneagram. Our questions, type names and descriptions are original to TestMyPsyche.

What if two types score almost the same?

Read both descriptions and think about which motivation feels most true deep down. Many people identify with a main type plus a neighboring 'wing' type.

Can my type change?

Most teachers of the model say your core type stays the same, but how healthy and balanced you are within it can change a lot over time.

Is one type better than another?

No. Every type has gifts and challenges. The aim is self-understanding, not ranking.

How long does it take?

About 8 minutes for 36 short statements.
