About the method

Type-based personality tests go back to the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, who described 'psychological types' in 1921. He suggested that people differ in whether they turn their energy outward (extraversion) or inward (introversion), and in how they prefer to take in information and make decisions.

In the mid-20th century, Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers built on Jung's ideas and added a fourth scale about how people approach structure and planning. Combining four either/or preferences gives 16 possible types, each described by a four-letter code.

Psychologists point out that most people fall somewhere in the middle of each scale rather than neatly on one side, which is why we show your percentage on every scale — not just your letters. Many researchers prefer trait-based models like the Big Five, but four-letter types remain a popular, memorable way to think about differences.

This 16-Type Personality Test is independent: all 64 statements, type names and descriptions were written for TestMyPsyche. It isn't affiliated with any official type instrument, and it's meant for self-reflection and fun.

Frequently asked questions

What do the four letters mean?

E or I (Extraverted or Introverted), S or N (Sensing or Intuitive), T or F (Thinking or Feeling) and J or P (Judging or Perceiving). Together they make your type code, such as ENFP.

Is this the official MBTI® test?

No. This is an independent 16-type test with our own questions and descriptions. It's inspired by Carl Jung's theory of psychological types but isn't affiliated with any official test.

What if I'm close to 50% on a scale?

That's very common! It means you use both sides of that preference. Read the descriptions for both letters — you may recognize yourself in each.

Can my type change?

Your core preferences are usually fairly stable, but results can shift with mood, life stage or stress — especially on scales where you're close to the middle.

Which type is the best?

None. Every type has its own strengths and challenges. The goal is to understand yourself and others better, not to rank people.

How long does it take?

About 12 minutes for 64 short statements. Your progress is saved in your browser, so you can take a break and come back.
