About the method

This test is based on a model of career interests developed by the American psychologist John L. Holland from the 1950s onward. Holland proposed that most people — and most jobs — can be described by six interest types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising and Conventional, often shortened to RIASEC.

Holland arranged the six types in a hexagon: neighboring types (like Artistic and Social) have more in common than opposite ones (like Artistic and Conventional). People tend to be happiest in jobs that match their strongest interests.

The RIASEC model is one of the most widely used and researched tools in career guidance. Many schools and public career services use it, including the US Department of Labor's O*NET career database.
